This exquisite oil on panel by Henri Lienard de Saint-Delis (signed lower right) measures 13.38 x 14.37 inches and was exhibited in 1973 at the MusŽe de Deauville under number 111 in the exhibition La Normandie, du PrŽromantisme au Postimpressionnisme. Born into a military family his father was a Dragoons officer Saint-Delis grew up in Le Havre, where he met Othon Friesz. Both artists studied under Charles Lullier (a former pupil of Ingres) at the ƒcole des Beaux-Arts, Le Havre, crossing paths with influential figures like Jongkind, Dufy, Braque, and Lecourt. After a brief period of study in Paris (attending Jean Paul Laurens's studio and discovering the Impressionists), Saint-DŽlis returned to Le Havre. In 1905, he contracted tuberculosis, necessitating a lengthy stay in a Swiss sanatoriumÑmost of his Swiss works were later destroyed during the 1944 bombardment of Le Havre. Around 1920, Saint-DŽlis moved from Le Havre to Honfleur, where he produced his most significant body of work: portraits, still lifes, and especially landscapes celebrating the town and its port. Known for his vibrant color paletteÑpartly influenced by Fauvism-and boldly sketched compositions, Saint-DŽlis showcased his art at the Salon des IndŽpendants in Paris from 1905 onward, as well as in several solo and retrospective exhibitions in France, England, and the United States. Today, his works can be found in esteemed collections, including the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
