A serene Mediterranean view by the celebrated French landscape painter Emmanuel Lansyer, this oil on canvas is signed and dated 1874, measuring 27.5 x 42 cm. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, the painting exemplifies Lansyer's masterful approach to capturing light and atmosphereÑqualities that distinguished him at the Salon and beyond. Born in Bouin (VendŽe), Lansyer initially pursued architectural studies under Eugne Viollet-le-Duc in Paris before dedicating himself to painting full time. A brief period with Gustave Courbet and participation in the Salon des RefusŽs (1863) launched his career. His early successesÑA September Morning in Douarnenez and The Banks of the EllŽe at Faou‘tÑearned him medals at the Salon of 1865. Travels through Brittany, the Mediterranean coast, and other regions shaped his oeuvre, while friendships with poets like JosŽ Maria de Heredia and Sully Prudhomme, as well as ties to architects and sculptors, enriched his artistic circle. Renowned for his ability to depict both natural and architectural landscapes, Lansyer continued to exhibit widely, receiving state commissions and serving on the jury of the Salon des Artistes Franais. At his death in 1893, he bequeathed to the city of Loches his home, personal collections, and many of his worksÑensuring his lasting legacy in the world of 19th-century French landscape painting. His art is preserved in various museums, including the Louvre and the Petit Palais in Paris, as well as institutions in Auxerre, Castres, Dunkirk, Geneva, Lille, Loches, Nantes, Philadelphia, Tours, and Valenciennes.
