This enchanting oil on cardboard, measuring 61 x 46 cm, is signed lower left by ElisŽe Maclet and comes with a certificate of authenticity. It captures a quintessential Parisian scene viewed from Montmartre, focusing on the SacrŽ-CÏur Basilica as seen from Rue Saint-Rustique. ElisŽe Maclet was born in Lyons-en-Santerre on April 12, 1881, and passed away in Paris on August 23, 1962. Taught the basics of oil painting by a local abbot, he moved to Montmartre in 1906, soon catching the attention of literary figures like Colette and Francis Carco, as well as an American art dealer. His friend Max Jacob also wrote about him. By painting Montmartre's iconic localesÑsuch as the Lapin Agile, the Moulin de la Galette, and Mimi Pinson's houseÑwell before Maurice Utrillo popularized them, Maclet established himself among the notable Montmartre painters. After World War I, Maclet achieved significant acclaim for his Parisian views. Around 1920, a wealthy patron enabled him to stay in the South of France for an extended period, where he painted vibrant Mediterranean landscapes that at times drew comparisons to Matisse. Despite personal health challenges leading to his internment in 1933, Maclet's work continued to attract admiration, culminating in exhibitions in Paris (notably in 1960).
