A tranquil riverside scene by French painter Antonin Fanart, executed in oil on strong cardboard and signed in the lower left corner. Measuring 36.5 x 55 cm, this work comes with a certificate of authenticity. Born into a middle-class family in Besancon, Fanart left for Geneva in 1849 to study art, exhibiting there in 1854 before debuting at the Paris Salon in 1857. Specializing in landscapes, Fanart traveled extensively through Switzerland, Savoy, and Franche-Comte, using these regions as the inspiration for many of his compositions. Politically active, he opposed the Second Empire via his newspaper Le Doubs and later served as the sub-prefect of MontbŽliard in 1871. Settling back in Besanon, where he became a city councillor, Fanart founded the MusŽe du Palais Granvelle and the ÒUnion Comtoise des Arts DŽcoratifs." He passed away from heart disease on September 2, 1903, in the city of his birth. Today, his works are included in public collections such as the Dole Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology of Besancon. A street in Besanon's Montrapon-Fontaine-Ecu district bears his name, honoring his contributions to the city and to French art.
