- Lot Description
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). Motif Spirale (A.R. 404). Ceramic. Numbered 127/500, with the workshop numbering, inscribed 'Edition Picasso' and 'Madoura', partially painted, with the Edition Picasso and Madoura stamps on the reverse. Diameter measures 9.5 in. Catalogue Raisonne: A. Ramie.
Condition: In very good condition. Light surface soiling.
In 1946, Pablo Picasso met Madoura potters George and Suzanne Ramie, owners of the Madoura Pottery Studio. Inspired by the clarity of light and the Mediterranian colors, Picasso collaborated with the Ramies, a relationship that would span 25 years. The Ramies introduced him to various techniques and were able to produce editions of the objects Picasso created. Picasso found that working with clay was a more relaxing medium for him, a break from the more strenuous demands of painting. It was at the Madoura studio in 1953 that he met Jaqueline Roque, a potter, who would later become his second wife.
