- Lot Description
Maurice Sterne (Latvian/American, 1878-1957). Bathers at Sea. Oil on board. Signed 'Sterne' lower right. Measures 20 in. high x 26 in. wide (with frame 29 in. high x 34.75 in. wide).
Condition: In very good condition. No apparent evidence of inpaint visible under UV light. Minor frame abrasion.
Born in Latvia in 1878, Maurice Stern immigrated to the U.S. in 1890. He studied at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York and after 1914 divided his time between Italy and his adopted country. He is credited with being one of the first artist to popularize scenes of Bali to western audiences. From 1935 to 1941 he painted 20 mural panels for the Kennedy building in the Department of Justice as part of the New Deal. His work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angles County Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Boston Museum, Detroit Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Cleveland Museum, Yale University and the Tate Gallery in London.
