Louise Bourgeois began printmaking in the late 1930s after moving from Paris to New York. Upon gaining popularity, particularly as a sculptor and installation artist, and after a celebrated exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Bourgeois began printmaking again in the late 1980s. She developed a personal visual language that included spiders and biomorphic forms to represent internal conflicts. Returning to printmaking allowed her to explore and express feelings of anxiety, loneliness, jealousy and sexual tension, themes that permeated her work throughout her artistic career. Her work is in many important collections worldwide including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tate in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
