American Coin Silver Tea and Coffee Set, Pennell Family, New England
Of Renaissance Revival style, each piece repousse with acanthus on domed lids and floral banded reserves inscribed 'Father and Mother from Andrew and Augusta 1863'. The handle modeled as a branch issuing laurel leaves, while the spouts encircled by oaken bourn scrolls, ending on a stepped base
Each domed lid surmounted by a finial in the form of a figure engaged in artistic or domestic arts.
Comprising a Tea pot,10in. a Coffee pot 9 1/4in. a Chocolate pot 9in. , a Covered Sugar bowl, a Creamer and Waste bowl.

"Coin," stamped on the back of a piece appeared in the early nineteenth century and indicate the object was made with silver of the same purity as the coins of the day, though by this time not necessarily from them.

The Pennell family emigrated to Massachusetts and Maine in the fist years of the 1700's and established a large shipyard at Middle Bays, near Brunswick, Maine.. This location became one of the most famous shipbuilding sites on the Maine coast, and here Thomas Pennell completed in ninety days, ready to launch a privateer which was employed by the colonists during the revolutionary war. While Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe resided at Brunswick, she often visited the Pennells. . When the poet Longfellow was a student at Bowdoin College he witnessed many a launching scene at Middle Bays, hence his famous poem, "The Building of the Ship." One of these vessels was "The Union."
