ARTIST: Otl Aicher Ulm Germany 1922 -1991
Known as Otto Aicher, was a German graphic designer and typographer. He is best known for having designed pictograms for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich that proved influential on the use of stick figures for public signage, as well as designing the typeface Rotis. Aicher also co-founded the Ulm School of Design.
Aicher was born in Ulm, in the south-western state of Baden-Württemberg, on May 13, 1922. In 1937 he was arrested for refusing to join the Hitler Youth and then he failed his college entrance examination in 1941. He was then drafted into the German army to fight in World War II, though he tried to avoid it. He deserted the army and went into hiding in the Scholls' house in Wutach in 1945. In 1946, after the end of the war, Aicher began studying sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. In 1947, he opened his own studio in Ulm. He married Inge Scholl in 1952.
In 1966 Aicher was asked by the organisers of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich to become the Olympic Games' lead designer. He was asked to create a design for the Olympics that complemented the architecture of the newly built stadium in Munich designed by Günther Behnisch. Aicher consulted with Masaru Katsumie, who had designed the previous 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The choice of the artists who were to be invited had to be made along these lines: A precise study of the market was needed at the time. Established and avant-garde trends in art ought to be represented in the series: expressionism, surrealism, neorealism, pop-art/op-art. The artists had to be experienced in designing posters; their high artistic quality had to be world famous.

The art posters were original produced in three different valences:
Printed October 1967, Size 64 cm x 102 cm (25.2 in x 40.2in)
Class 1 - Original graphics: Hand-printed by the artist from the original plate on high-quality paper, signed and limited to 200 copies per design
Class 2 - Original posters: Hand finished further impressions from the same original plate on slightly lower quality paper but heavier than reproduction; the plate is signed, but not numbered. The original poster edition should not exceed 4,000 copies per design.
Class 3 - Original Reproductions of the original graphic: Produced by off-set or photogravure process on poster paper.
