An early Victorian silver snuff box, the rounded rectangular form with floral scroll borders enclosing engine-turned decoration, reeded sides and presentation engraving to the hinged lid. Hallmarked Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham 1839. Length measuring 7 cm, weight 62.3 grams.'Presented by the poor Inhabitants of Wigan to Jonathan ? MRCS as a Testimony of Respect & Approbation of his Services whilst Surgeon to the Wigan Dispensary. April 1840'
The snuff box displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Some surface dints and bumps and areas of heavier and denser scratches, especially visible to the base. Considerable loss of surface detail and definition to some areas of the engine turned decoration. Hinges appear in good working order. Patches of heavier staining/tarnishing to the interior. The hallmarks are clear and legible, some slight rubbing.
