A mid-Victorian silver tankard of slightly tapering outline to a skirted base, the domed and hinged lid having an engraved golfing crest within foliate borders and opening to a gilded interior, with scrolled handle, presentation inscription to one side and a further foliate border to the base. Hallmarked Elkington & Co Ltd., Birmingham 1867. Height to thumb rest measures 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm), weight 14.36 ozt (446.6 grams). 'Presented to The Royal Liverpool Golf Club by J Spinks to be played for on August 7th 1871. Won by Robert B. Forman'
The tankard appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The hinged lid is in good working order and the lid sits nearly flush, just leaving a slight gap when closed. Some minor dints/nicks and a slight knock to the foot rim. Some loss of surface detail to decoration. The hallmarks appear rubbed but legible. Part hallmarks to interior of lid.
