A late Victorian silver mounted claret jug, the clear glass body with bulbous base rising to a cylindrical neck with silver collar, foliate capped scroll handle and a circular hinged lid surmounted with a lion holding a vacant shield. Hallmarked John Grinsell & Sons, Birmingham 1890. Maximum height to finial measures 11 inches (28 cm).
The claret jug displays some general wear, surface marks and scratches in keeping with the age and use. The glass appears in good overall condition. The silver mounts are quite dull and tarnished in appearance and would benefit from a clean and polish. Minor folds and splits around the edge of the spout. Hinged lid appears in working order. The hallmarks are clear and legible, slight rubbing to maker's mark. With corresponding part hallmarks.
