Audubon (American, 1785-1851), Long Billed Curlew (City of Charleston), Watermarked Audubon Society Edition, marked 'No. 47' and 'Plate CCXXXI' at top, titled 'Long-billed Curlew, Numenius Longirostris. 1. Male. 2. Female. City of Charleston.' lower center, marked 'Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S., F.L.S.' lower left and 'Engraved, Printed and Coloured by B. Havell 1836' lower right, watermarked Audubon Society Abbeville Press Edition, matted and framed. Frame size: 38 in. x 50 1/2 in.
John James Audubon is perhaps the best known American ornithologist. Over the course of his career, Audubon was credited with the identification of 25 new species. His major work, the full color The Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1839 and depicting dozens of detailed illustrations of the birds of North America, is largely regarded as one of the most significant works of ornithology. His work was foundational for the National Audubon Society, which was founded in 1905 as an organization dedicated to conservation and the restoration of natural ecosystems.Measurements: Height: by sight 24 3/4 in. x Width: 37 1/4 in.

Good condition, small stain along upper border, right of center, not viewed out of frame.
