Description:
J.J. Audubon (1785-1851) Birds of America, 1856, 7 Vols., "The Birds of America, from Drawings Made In the United States and Their Territories." by John Hames Audubon (1785-1851), 7 vols, "New York: Published by V.G. Audubon, 1856," octavo edition, including all 500 hand colored stone lithograph plates, with bookplates from the collection of "Mrs. J.F. Minis Savannah" 1938, signature of original owner on first blank leaves reading "A. Porter Savannah 7 May 1857," with embossed library stamp on title pages, leather binding with decorative embossed covers with gilt tooling, gilt edged pages.
John James Audubon is perhaps the best known American ornithologist. Over the course of his career, Audubon was credited with the identification of 25 new species. His major work, the full color The Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1839 and depicting dozens of detailed illustrations of the birds of North America, is largely regarded as one of the most significant works of ornithology. His work was foundational for the National Audubon Society, which was founded in 1905 as an organization dedicated to conservation and the restoration of natural ecosystems.Measurements: Height: 10 7/8 in. x Width: 7 1/2 in. x Depth: 2 in.

Overall good condition, paper toned with foxing throughout, Plate 286 with tear from lower edge, wear to edges of covers, some spines separating, Volume 1 covers detached.
