Description:
A Fine Federal Mahogany Sofa, Probably Michael Allison, New York, c. 1815, with ribbon and wheat carved three panel backrest above an upholstered backrest and sides with reeded and leaf carved hand rest uprights centering a partially over upholstered seat raised on reeded turned legs ending in casters, with accession number 1982.12 on back leg, with patterned yellow silk upholstery used in the John F. Kennedy White House provided to the Telfair by someone who worked at Jansen on the redecoration project. Provenance: purchased through Barry Tracey (former head curator of American Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum) from Edward Vasen Jones in 1982. This sofa is almost identical to a Michael Allison sofa belonging to the Art Institute of Chicago illustrated in Kenny, Peter M. and Michael K. Brown, Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art: New York, 2011, Fig. 69, pg. 73.Measurements: Height: 36 in. x Width: 79 in. x Depth: 32 in.
Condition:
Good overall condition, patch to bottom of one central back leg, repair to top of back right leg where it joins the backrest, old marks and scratches, some wear to edges, backrest upholstery lifting on right side, wear to silk at edges, some stains.Buyer Pays Shipping Cost.
