Description:
Emile Vernon (French, 1872-1919), Portrait of a Woman, Oil on Canvas, signed lower left, depicting a dark haired beauty with diaphanous dress, with stamp on back of canvas Sennclier…, in a period giltwood frame. Frame size: 33 1/4 in. x 29 in.
Paul Émile Vernon was born in Blois, France in 1872. Studying at the School of Fine Arts Tours in the Loire Valley, France, he won his first design award in 1888. Encouraged by this success, he moved to Paris to train under William Bouguereau and Auguste Trouphème in the School of Fine Arts. Specializing in watercolors, Vernon loved to paint women and children using bright colors in cheerful rural and bucolic settings. In 1898, he participated in the Exhibition of fine arts and decorative arts of Tours and began at the Salon des Artistes Français. He exhibited there regularly until 1913, presenting in particular portraits, landscapes and floral paintings. He executed some wall paintings such as those of the Châtellerault theater in 1899. Condition:
Good condition, small chip to paint on chin, stretcher marks, craquelure to paint. Frame with cracks, losses and pieces loose.
