October 1778-Dated Revolutionary War, Manuscript Document Signed by "Jon.(athan) Hastings," Payroll for the Regiment Commanded by William S. Smith Lt. Colonel, Fine.
This is an original Manuscript Document, 1 page, measuring 12.5" x 8" and the split vertical centerfold being archivally sealed on the blank reverse side. The header reads, "Payroll of the Field & Staff & noncommissioned Staff in the Regiment Commanded by Wm. S. Smith Lt. Col. for the Month of Oct. 1778."
This Document is boldly Signed by Jonathan Hastings, Capt. Commander at the bottom right. The name, rank, time of service and the amount of pay and subsistence for each member is neatly laid out in this ledger, beginning with Wm. S. Smith. A total of six names mentioned are; Lt. Col. Thomas Edwards Adt., Robert Williams, Paymaster, Abner Harmon, Sgt, Major, Ebenezer Freeman, 2nd Maj. Serg, and John Scott, Major. It appears to have been written while camped at the fort at Pawtuxet, Rhode Island, late Col. Lee's Regiment. Some modest toning, being fully legible. A rare original Revolutionary War document.

LT. COL. WILLIAM STEPHENS SMITH (1755-1816) was the son-in-law of President John Adams, a brother-in-law of President John Quincy Adams and an Aide-decamp to General John Sullivan in 1776. He was on the staff of General Lafayette in 1780 and 1781, and then transferred to the staff of General Washington. He was Secretary of the Legation at London in 1784 and returned to America in 1788; he was appointed by President Washington to be United States Marshal for the district of New York in 1789 and later Supervisor of Revenue.
