Rare Revolutionary War Period British Ship's Swivel Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss or Espingole by "J. PROBIN"
c. 1770-1780 Colonial to Revolutionary War Era, Revolutionary War Period, British Ship's Swivel Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss or Espingole, by "J. PROBIN", Restored with Display Mount, Choice Very Fine.
This Revolutionary War Period British Brass Barrel Flintlock Ships Swivel Blunderbuss (Espingole) by "J. PROBIN", has a 18.25" round Brass Blunderbuss Barrel, is 35.5" long overall in length and has been professionally restored. Its all Brass furniture includes a trigger guard with an Acorn finial. The wood stock has a period restoration around the muzzle and is lacking some wood just in front of the trigger guard, this being caused from wear, being from the post & yoke. Otherwise, it is solid with normal minor period scratches and dings from years of use in service. The Wrought-Iron Post and Yoke is original to the period, but not to this gun. Its wood ram rod has a steel tip and is worn from use. The Arsenal style display stand it comes with is newly made of wood with copper plates, modeled exactly after the originals housed in museums. The restoration of this Ship's Swivel Gun was converted to percussion in the 1840's. The barrel's touch-hole has been re-bushed. Fortunately it has a hard to find an exact replacement lock in its original Flintlock configuration. There is an old, repaired section at the muzzle (about 6") that has been nicely spliced in. The barrel does not have any visible proof marks which may suggest at some point, this gun was in American hands, where it is known that sometimes they intentionally removed any markings proving British ownership. A fantastic, impressive looking Ship's Blunderbuss that is in good mechanical working order and easily worth our conservative estimate range.
