Carved and Painted Wood Spreadwing American Eagle Attributed to Wilhelm Schimmel, Cumberland Valley, PA.
Hand-carved and Painted Wood patriotic American Spread Wing Eagle, attributed to Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890), German-born wood carver of Cumberland Valley, PA., 17 inch wide Wingspan by 9.5 inches high, Very Fine.
American Spreadwing Eagle, Hand-carved Wood, Painted measures 9.5" high with a 17" wide wingspan and 4" wide base. This example hand-painted in muted red, green, tan, and brown colors with some natural wood still apparent as intended. This Schimmel Eagle is not signed as always. It is in pleasing condition with some minor rub from handling to its highpoints, and has a hidden roughly 1" wide chip of wood lacking from the base behind the right talon, as shown. Overall, this patriotic American Eagle's mouth, talons, wings and beak are distinct as made, having no damage. A similar, apparently identical Wilhelm Schimmel Eagle with a 21.25" wingspan and 13" high sold on January 22, 2021 by a major New York auction house at $12,500. This important current offering is of museum quality and attractive for display.
William Schimmel was a German-born wood carver who tramped through the Cumberland Valley near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, often staying in jails and almshouses. His only occupation was carving heads of animals out of soft pine, which he would sell for a few pennies each. Reportedly he had a very surly disposition.
He became the first of four important Cumberland County carvers, specializing in large, dramatic, colorful eagles. Schimmel's eagles have both smooth and crosshatched bodies, and many of his carvings are on display at the Winterthur Museum and the Cumberland County Historical Society. The American Eagle was a favorite theme for carvers, including one of the most noted Folk sculptors of the 19th century, Wilhelm (1817-1890). Schimmel's Eagles vary in size from mere inches to several feet. Eagles were his signature pieces, but Schimmel is also known for representations of other animals such as roosters, parrots and lions.
