Rare French & Indian War to American Revolutionary War "VAUGHAN" Royal Navy Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistol
1744-Dated French & Indian War to American Revolutionary War Period Use, Rare British Pattern 1716 Royal Navy Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistol, by "VAUGHAN", Very Good.
This Pistol is 19.25" overall length, in its Original Flintlock Configuration with a 12", .62 cal. round steel barrel stamped on the top of the breech with remnants of the Tower Ordnance Proofs, an unidentified barrel makers mark "E I" the number "86" or "98". Its Lock is marked, "VAUGHN", the date "1744", a "CROWN" over "GR" (King George II), plus a small "CROWN" over the "BROAD ARROW" (indicating government ownership). Its heavy brass regulation furniture includes the up-dated Pattern 1738 Heavy Dragoon/Land Service trigger guard. Its stock has the remnants of the Stores Keeper mark, "ROYAL CYPHER" just above the rear of lock (extremely hard to see) and has an inspector's mark, a small "CROWN" over "7" just above the right side of the trigger guard. The Stock has a stress crack at the muzzle where the ram rod enters the channel and has small areas of wood loss, otherwise solid with some normal age scratches and dings from years of actual service. The wood ram rod (most likely an old replacement). A very scarce and desirable Naval Sea Service Pistol in good mechanical working order.

Provenance: Clark R. Hoffman collection. A note in its barrel reads, "purchased in 1984" at the HISTORICAL ARMS AND BLADE SHOW, January 28-29, 1984.
About the GUNSMITH Maker: "VAUGHN" most likely Edward or John (2) VAUGHN.
