OLIVER HAZARD PERRY (1785-1819). Historic American Naval Officer who defeated the British at the Battle of Lake Erie (1813), afterward sending the famous dispatch to General William Henry Harrison (Later President): "We have met the enemy and they are ours."
Framed commemorative collection of Oliver Hazard Perry memorabilia highlighted by a Clipped Signature Card, "O. H. Perry", Choice Very Fine. The Signed Card is custom matted in navy blue and framed with three other items of Oliver H. Perry memorabilia relating to the Battle of Lake Erie: 1. Bold Type of Perry's first message post-battle, his famous dispatch to General William Henry Harrison, commander of the American ground forces at Lake Erie, in violet and purple which reads, "WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND THEY ARE OURS"; 2. A Photocopy of his second, less-heralded, message post-battle, his Letter to Secretary of the Navy William Jones informing Jones of the results of the battle, as framed; 3. His Color Portrait seated on a ship, presumably the USS Niagara, with a pistol in his belt, and his personal battle flag "Don't Give Up The Ship" flying behind him. The measurements of the framed items are as follows: the Signed Card measures 2.75" x 1.25", the Reproduced Letter measures 7.75" x 7.75" (by sight), his Portrait measures 2.75" x 3.5" (by sight), and the Bold Type measures 5.25" x 6.75" (by sight). The decorative gold-gilt and black marbled inset frame itself fully measures 21.25" x 16.5". Perry's letter to Secretary of the Navy William Jones reads, in full:
"Brig Niagara, off the Western Sister, -- Head of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813, 4 P.M. ---
Sir: - It has pleased the Almighty to give to the arms of the United States a signal victory over their enemies on this lake. The British squadron, consisting of two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop, have this moment surrendered to the force under my command after a sharp conflict. -- I have the honor to be, Sir, Very Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, -- O. H. Perry"
The entire assemblage and the frame are in very nice condition. The exception is the cover of the signature which was previously displaced under the frame glass.
