French & Indian War Reporting the Ft. William Henry Siege
October 1757-Dated French and Indian War Period, THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, England, Reporting the Ft. William Henry Siege, Choice Extremely Fine.
October 1757-Dated original period Magazine measuring 8" x 5" with a 2-column layout, complete as issued by Sylvanus Urban, "Printed by D. Henry and R. Cave at St. John's Gate", lacking map. This issue features a number of articles of particular early American interest foreshadowed by a "Summary of the Military Transactions in America". The correspondent presents a grim view of the current situation of the ongoing French and Indian War, emphasized by his reporting of the taking of Fort William Henry, "We find by woeful experience, that our great numbers of regular troops have been of no service for want of proper management; the French carry all before them; and what the next year will produce, God knows; I tremble to think." The American affairs continue to be discussed throughout the issue. Some highlights from this section include reporting on the June 3, 1756 Treaty between the Pennsylvania Governor and the Delaware tribal Chieftain and other members of the Ten Tribes. Most thrilling are the Letters reporting on the Siege of Fort William Henry, from the days before and after the fort fell to the French and their Indian allies. These Letters, spanning from August 8, 1757 to August 24, 1757 begin by preaching urgency to come to the aid of the Fort before it fell, continue by listing the conditions of surrender of the Fort by Lieutenant Colonel Monro to the Marquis de Montcalm, and end by decrying the French for allowing their Indian allies to barbarically violate the agreed Terms of Surrender. "Private letters from New York unanimously agree, that the French immediately after the capitulation, most perfidiously let their Indian bloodhounds loose upon the people." An important historic issue in choice clean quality.
Also included in this issue is a letter regarding a non-descript oyster shell with beautiful accompanying copper plate, a historical chronicle on news of the day, a list of births, etc. Disbound from a larger volume. Great historical contemporary reading.
