Lilian Whiting was an American writer, editor, activist, journalist and author of poetry and short stories. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Whiting is best known for being one of the first women to edit a newspaper. Her newspaper credits include literary editor of The Boston Traveler and editor in chief of The Boston Budget. She was also active in the cause of women's suffrage.
She covered women's roles in the community and in the advancement of society. Perhaps not surprisingly her interest led her to Mary Baker Eddy, who was beginning to attract attention as the discoverer and founder of Christian Science. The two women developed a friendship that lasted over two decades.
An associate of Eddy outside of her religious movement, Whiting expressed appreciation for her accomplishments and sought to illuminate them for readers. Whiting was the author of The World Beautiful, From Dreamland Sent, a book of poems, A Study of the Life and Poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, A Record of Kate Field, The World Beautiful in Books, Boston Days, Florence of Landor, The Outlook Beautiful, Italy the Magic Land, Paris the Beautiful, and others.
