Post Revolution
Broadside Notice from Alexander M'Dougall, President of "SOCIETY OF THE CINCINNATI, CITY of NEW YORK"
July 4th, 1785-Dated, Post Revolutionary War Period, Printed Broadside Document, Announcement of a Special Meeting of the "Society of the Cincinnati" on November 3, 1785, Framed, Very Fine.
Exceedingly rare original Broadside printed announcement of a special meeting of the Society of Cincinnati in the City of New York to be held on November 3, 1785 "at the House of Mr. Cape." This small Broadside measures 5" x 6", cleanly printed on laid period paper with a typeset floral printed border on all four sides. Whichever Society of the Cincinnati member received this notice, he folded it into fourths such that there are some minor splits along the horizontal fold. Mounted within a lovely two-tone gold-gilt and antiqued simple wooden frame to an overall size of 7" x 8.25, displayed under UV-protection glass to best protect this historic document. Signed in print by Alexander M'Dougall, President, indicating "Such Members into whose Hand this Notification may come, will please to communicate it." This is the very first example we have ever seen and offered, being exceptional dated July 4th, 1785.
The Society of the Cincinnati is a hereditary society with branches in the United States and France, founded in 1783, to preserve the ideals and fellowship of officers of the Continental Army who served in the Revolutionary War. Now in its third century, the Society promotes the public interest in the Revolution through its library and museum collections, publications, and other activities. It is the oldest hereditary society in America. Although restricted to lineal male descendants, there is a partnership society called Daughters of the Cincinnati which permits all female descendants of Continental officers.
