Civil War Union General ALPHEUS S. WILLIAMS ALS Written while Stationed at Headquarters "Bunker Hill, Ma."
ALPHEUS S. WILLIAMS (1810-1878). Civil War Union General, lawyer, judge, journalist, and United States Congressman.
March 6, 1862-Dated Civil War, Autograph Letter Signed, "A. Williams," 2 pages, 5.25" x 8.25", Head Qrs. 3d Brigade, Bunker Hill, Ma., Very Fine. Written to Union General Hamilton during Stonewall Jackson's Spring of 1862 military campaign through the Shenandoah Valley. This military content Letter reads, in full:
"My Dear General - I am glad to hear you are so near me. I have been alone so long that it is quite refreshing to have you near at hand. Come up here & I shall be glad to be your Lieutenant. -- I have no especial news - except that the route to W[inchester] is strongly fortified. The slopes of the mountains which run parallel to the W. pike are dug with rifle pits, & there is a battery or an earth works which commands the road. They can be turned I think four miles from this, so that we can reach the mountain side & turn the pits & fortifications. I hope you are to operate on this line.
"I assure you that I shall be glad to give the aid of 3d Brigade against any force.
"My impression is, from information, here, that Jackson intends to make a stand at W.
"If the thing is properly managed we can make a great point.
"Let me hear from you when you are up. Yours truly, A. Williams, B.G."
This Letter's paper shows normal folds and light expected tone and some soiling on rear leaf, otherwise in nice condition. Excellent content. Accompanied by a typed transcription. ( 2 items).
