Colony of Massachusetts Bay. May 25, 1775, Ten Shillings, Paul Revere Copper-Plate Engraved, Emergency Issue Rectangular Long Note, Due Date of May 25, 1776, PCGS graded Very Fine-30.
Fr. MA-142. This note's "Emergency" issue date comes just one month after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on the morning of April 19th, 1775. This authentic Paul Revere, Jr. Engraving of the Copper Plate used to print this historic Revolutionary War note, commissioned for the Colony of Massachusetts-Bay. Only 4,333 notes were authorized printed. All issued notes were required and supposedly to have been returned back into the Massachusetts Treasury one year later by May 25, 1776. These bills also carried a 6% per annum interest rate of return. In theory, this entire issue was to be destroyed after the notes redemption. Most of the known surviving notes are found having small hole punch cancellations within the body. Not only do precious few original examples exist, only a handful or so have No Cancel.
This current specimen has four full, even margins. Its printed text has excellent centering and appears extremely clean on its printed face on the period laid paper. At the left side margin printed indent, the historic Patriotic legend engraved by Paul Revere reads: "(Am)erican Paper". This outstanding note is very pleasing, having the eye appeal of near Extremely Fine with strong black print. Its Serial number is boldly written in deep brown, as well as the signatures of Abraham Fuller and Henry Gardner, Receiver General (Treasurer), with short cross marked cancels on his signature. The reverse side is blank, free of notations or detractions having some soiling to the quarter panel section most exposed in circulation. The holder notes apparent split restored, where a deft sealed edge split existed. This May 25, 1775 issue is listed and illustrated in the 1954 reference book entitled "The Engravings of Paul Revere" by Clarence Brigham, published by the American Antiquarian Association. A highly important, historically significant Paul Revere, Jr. engraved note to support the American Revolutionary cause for Massachusetts.
