c 1864 CDV of Captain Orren E. Smith, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the First African-American Unit of the United States Army and Subject of the 1989 Movie "Glory"
c. 1864 Carte de Visite Photograph of Captain Orren E. Smith, of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry First African-American Unit of the U.S. Army, and Subject of the 1989 Movie, "Glory", Crisp Extremely Fine.
Captain of Co. G., Orren E. Smith might have faded into obscurity, but for the famous 54th Mass Volunteer Infantry was no ordinary unit -- it was the First African-American unit of the U.S. Army whose exploits were memorialized in the major film release, "Glory." Smith served in the 54th under Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. This is a crisp, clean image of Captain Smith having nice contrast, measuring 3.5" x 2-1/8", on a regular CDV card mount measuring 4" x 2.5", with just a hint of toning at the base of the photograph. The back of the CDV reads, in other handwritten pencil: "Smith, 54 Mass Vol Inf.". This is clearly an image of Orrin Smith, whose name, by the way, has been seen variously as Orin, Orrin, and Orren. Previous service included joining Co. H, 2d Mass. on May 25, 1861 as 1st Sergeant, Webster, Mass. Smith served less than a year and he resigned on January 24, 1864 because of disability injuries received in the historic assault at Ft. Wagner, SC where he was wounded on July 18, 1863. A rare image.
