c. 1860-70 Victorian Era, Colorful Staffordshire BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Figure in Depiction, Earthenware titled below, "The Old English Gentleman" in Hand-Painted and fired Gold Script on its white base, Design type of Arman AI.21, Choice Extremely Fine.
This wonderful large English Staffordshire Figure depicts a standing Benjamin Franklin, produced for export to America, yet titled, "The Old English Gentleman" in Gold Script on the base. This historic Ben Franklin figure measures about 15.5" tall, including its 5.75" diameter oval base. Franklin is shown standing, some of the gold paint has flaked from the lower text, Ben is shown carrying his Colonial Tri-corner Hat under left arm, and holding a Document in right hand, while wearing a vivid violet neckpiece or scarf, white waistcoat with gold painted fancy decorations and britches, with Colonial period black shoes. This current example is similar to other Ben Franklin ceramic depictions we have seen as illustrated in Arman. This example having rich rosy cheeks, deep red lips, light charcoal-gray hair and black highlighted facial features. Similar in appearance to Arman AI.21, shown illustrated on page 233 of ANGLO-AMERICAN CERAMICS, Part 1, by authors David and Linda Arman, published 1998, there being listed and valued at that time between $1,000 to $1,500. A wonderful Benjamin Franklin design, not identified as either "Franklin" or "Washington" as we have previously offered, impressive and ready for display.
