"Per Overland Mail, Via Los Angeles" Rare Postal Cover
"Per Overland Mail, Via Los Angeles" titled, Rare Stagecoach Illustrated Vignette Western Postal Cover, by J. E. Damon, San Francisco, Postally Stamped from Sonoma Cal. with its Original 10 Cent Stamp, Fine.
Rare Vignette with "Per Overland Mail, Via Los Angeles", illustrated with a Four-horse Stagecoach with period design, imprint by J. E. Damon of San Francisco. There are some tears throughout areas of the top of the imprint from when opened with restoration to several words, slight edge wear tone and soiling from use, yet still has a good collectable appearance. Its original 10c Green George Washington, Ty. V (Scott 33) is perfectly tied by "Sonoma Cal. Oct. 2, 185(8)" black circular date stamp on this postally used cover addressed to a gentleman in Hiram Maine. This early California stagecoach postal service carried mail on the historic Butterfield Route. The Butterfield (or Southern) Overland Mail, which operated from September 15, 1858, until March 1, 1861, was a semiweekly mail and passenger stage service from St. Louis, Missouri, and Memphis, Tennessee, across northern Texas to San Francisco, California.
