Handsome Cased Pair of English Flintlock Pistols by CLARK & RODGERS, LONDON with Brass Barrels
c. 1790-1810, Cased Pair of English Flintlock Pistols with Brass Barrels and Locks by, CLARK & RODGERS, LONDON. Very Fine.
Choice Cased Pair of English Flintlock Pistols with Brass Barrels and Locks made by, CLARK & RODGERS, LONDON. Each Pistol with a 9", .577 (regulation) caliber multi-stage octagon-to-round brass smooth-bore barrel engraved, "LONDON" and struck with 2 Private PROOFS a "CROWN" over "V" (viewed) and a "CROWN" over "GP" (gun maker's proof) each within an oval. Brass lock plates maker marked, "CLARK & RODGERS" with high quality roller frizzen springs. Both Pistols are in their original flintlock configuration, having brass furniture, trigger guards with pineapple finials. Pistols are housed in a Brass Furniture Box with round lifting handle dates from the 1790's and was lined and labeled in the 1840's. The original paper label and green felt linen lining the case are frayed, worn and moth eaten whereas the guns themselves and accessories are very nice. Box measures about 20" x 8.75" x 2.75". The accessories include a black leather covered 3-way powder flask, bullet mold, tow, brass powder measure, loading/cleaning rod, lead balls, turn screw, and patches. Both Pistol stocks are attractive, being solid with only some light scratches and dings from years of handling and have flat sided plain grips that swell at bottom. One pistol has a fine trivial hairline crack through the grip and was mended long ago. The other pistol is missing a small sliver of wood from the left fore end, and a longer sliver from the right upper fore end section. Both pistols retain their original horn-tipped ram rods intact and are in good mechanical working order. A very attractive matched set with nice eye appeal. This type were typically purchased as Dueling pistols, or preferred by a Naval Officers because unlike steel, brass does not corrode or rust.
