Revolutionary War Era "Rattlesnake and 13-Stars" Button
c. 1775 Revolutionary War Era, Historical American Political Button, "Rattlesnake and Stars" Design, Albert PC-4, Excavated, Sharply Detailed Very Fine.
25 mm. This very rare, highly Patriotic American Revolutionary War Button can be found illustrated and listed on page 406 of Albert's Military Button book as "PC 4" - "Rattlesnake and Stars"; "1-piece." Also listed in Don Troiani's reference, "Insignia of Independence" page 259, AUS.bA. This historically significant American Button having a deep patina and fairly even surfaces. There is a very slight bend yet it is whole and complete, being nicely detailed in appearance, displaying an overall deep natural charcoal patina. This major design type displays, an American "Rattlesnake" with its Tail in Mouth, encircling 13-Stars (representing the 13 Colonies), the thirteen raised six-pointed stars bordered by a snake holding it's tail on a stippled field. The mostly blank flat reverse side includes a trace of where the shank was attached. We have seen only a few examples of this historic 13-Star "Rattlesnake and Stars" design over the decades and this one is vastly superior in eye appeal to most. As the American colonies came to identify more with their own communities and the concept of liberty, rather than as vassals of the British empire, icons that were unique to the Americas became increasingly popular. The rattlesnake, like the bald eagle and American Indian, came to symbolize American ideals and society. This type is highly sought after by Revolutionary War, Political and American Button collectors alike. The last example we offered was in our EAHA Auction of February 9, 2018, Lot 108, graded excavated Very Fine with shank, which sold for $3,250. This example having the sharpest details to the Patriotic face side designs we have offered.
The tail-eating Serpent is one of the oldest tales know to humans. According to ancient Egyptian legend, when the Sun G'd Ra merged with Osiris, ruler of the underworld, to form a new divine entity, two serpents representing the protective Snake-god Mehen slithered around the newborn super-god holding their tails in their mouths.
In Norse mythology, the serpent is Jrmungandr, an enormous sea beast and one of the monstrous children of the god Loki; a being so large it encircles the whole world, holding its tail in its mouth. One day, prophecy says, it will release its tail from its mouth and rise from the ocean depths to harken Ragnark-the end, and rebirth, of earth.
The Truth: Rattlesnakes have rattles at the ends of their tails with which they can make a noise. As the snake grows and ages it adds a new rattle each time it sheds its skin.
