Civil War Union General Benjamin Butler Signed Stock
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN "BEAST" BUTLER (1818-1893). Civil War Major Union General in the Army, nicknamed "Beast Butler," elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Mass., and later served as the 33rd Governor of Mass. from 1883 to 1884.
April 27, 1891-Dated, Partially-Printed Document Signed, "Benj. Butler," being a Stock Certificate for 20 shares of the Georgia-Alabama Investment Company, measuring 8" x 11", Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. Benjamin Butler, the Civil War General, was also known as the "Beast of New Orleans," signing this certificate at lower right as President of the company. The vignette at the upper center is of the Georgia Coat-of-Arms, "Constitution, Justice, Wisdom & Moderation." This company was organized to develop lands in Tallapoosa, Georgia. A nice quality colorful brown and black printed example of this scarce stock certificate. Excellent for framing and display with a strong, large rich brown ink signature by the Civil War General Benjamin Butler at lower right. Bright fresh and attractive.
Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) was an American General and politician. During the Civil War, he became Brigadier General of the Massachusetts militia and Major General of volunteers, commanding the land forces which captured New Orleans in 1862.
As Military Governor of that city, he earned the name "Beast Butler." After seven months, he was charged with corruption and dismissed. Butler served as a U.S. Representative and Governor of Massachusetts, and in 1884 ran unsuccessfully as the Presidential candidate of the Anti-Monopoly Party, and the Greenback-Labor Party.
