Admiral Chester Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur Dual-Signed Photograph of the USS Missouri Japanese WW II Surrender and More
(JAPANESE SURRENDER WW II). Admiral Chester Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur Dual Signed Photograph shown aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese Surrender Signing Ceremony, Crisp Extremely Fine.
1. Choice black and white image being an official U.S. Navy Photograph that measures 8" x 10". It features the ink-signed autographs of both Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and Douglas MacArthur. This image shows Nimitz and MacArthur striding past a group of Naval officers standing at attention aboard the USS Missouri, with American sailors in a more relaxed stance in the galleries above and to the right. Nimitz and MacArthur approach a microphone stand and a table where, just a few moments later on September 2, 1945, they would sign the historic agreement accepting the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. Nimitz's signature is bold and measures almost 3" long. MacArthur's signature is also bold, perhaps a hair tighter, and he appears to have used a different pen for the "Arthur" part of his signature (he never would have signed as "Douglas Mac". This is an incredibly historic image and decidedly rare with the signatures of both Nimitz and MacArthur.
2. Accompanied by a December 11, 1945-Dated, black-and white official Navy Photograph of a similar scene taken a short time later, with Nimitz, Admiral William Halsey, Jr. and MacArthur, not signed, Crisp Very Fine. This is an official wire photo of the Signing of the Peace Treaty between the United States and Japan aboard the USS Missouri battleship. This is an original photograph taken by a United States ASDEVLANT (The Anti Submarine Development Detachment, Atlantic Fleet) photographer on September 2, 1945. It was filed (File number: 7542) by the ASDEVLANT photo unit on December 11, 1945 as stated on the back of the photo. Pictured are: Signing the treaty - Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, Chester Nimitz. Behind Nimitz (l to r): MacArthur, Halsey, and Rear Admiral Forrest Sherman. To the left of the three, in the first row, first person is Lt. General Richard K. Sutherland. The overall condition is good, but there is a piece missing from the right top corner, well clear of the image itself. This image is not signed, the upper right corner tip lacking, not affecting the image. Shortly after this photograph was taken, representatives from eight other nations would sign the documents pictured here. An exceptionally historic and important pair of images, offering two viewpoints of the World War Two Japanese Surrender Signing Ceremony. (2 items)
