1865-Dated, Scarce First Edition Lincoln Biography by Henry J. Raymond titled, "The Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln.", illustrated with 14 Engravings, which includes Lincoln's speeches, addresses, messages, letters, proclamations, anecdotes and personal reminiscences by the artist Frank B. Carpenter, Fine.
A complete First Edition Printing of Henry J. Raymond's autobiography of Abraham Lincoln titled, "The Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln." Printed by Derby & Miller of New York. This book is in Very Fine condition internally. The brown cloth over the original leather boards are very worn and the original black title label on spine missing, but the interior is beautifully preserved. Illustrated with 14 Engravings as well as advertisements at rear, the Steel Engraving frontispiece of Abraham Lincoln by A. H. Ritchie, which is the highlight. Taken from the original New York Times publishing announcement on August 5, 1865: "Messers. DERBY & MILLER, of No. 5 Sprucestreet, will publish next week, The Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln, together with his State Papers, including his speeches, addresses, messages, letters and proclamations; also, a history of the tragical scenes connected with the close of his noble and eventful life; by HENRY J. RAYMOND, M.C. This work will also include anecdotes and personal reminiscences, of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, by FRANK B. CARPENTER, the artist, who painted the "First Reading of the Proclamation of Emancipation before the Cabinet," and who, while painting it at the White House, enjoyed six months' familiar intercourse with the late President.
The publishers announce that in this work every address, message, proclamation, speech, letter, &c., of President LINCOLN will be given, each in its proper connection, from official copy, the proof-sheets having been read by the late President's private Secretary. Some interesting and important private papers, heretofore unpublished, will also be given. It will have appended to it an elaborate index, which will add greatly to its value as a book of reference. It will also be embellished with fourteen engravings, including a fine steel portrait of Mr. LINCOLN by RITCHIE."
