1863 Confederate Book, "Acts Of The General Assembly State Of Virginia, Passed at the Extra Session, Commenced December 4, 1862"
1863 Confederate Book, "Acts Of The General Assembly State Of Virginia, Passed at the Extra Session, Commenced December 4, 1862", with Taxes of Ninety Cents on Slaves and Sixty Cents on "Free Negroes," Very Fine.
Published by John F. M'Dermot of Wheeling, VA. (now West Virginia). A fascinating and informative book that measures 9-1/8" x 5.75". Bound in marbled covers with calf spines that are worn with a 1.5" of heavy edge wear to the front, but the internals are nice with bright paper, minimal foxing and crisp, clear text. This volume contains the, "Acts Of The General Assembly State Of Virginia, Passed at the Extra Session, Commenced December 4, 1862" (108 pages). After seceding from the Union, Virginia (and all of the Confederate States) had to essentially start over, with their own new set of laws and regulations which, in Virginia's case, are recorded here. Many of the Acts in this book are very specific, referring to particular individuals or towns. Others are more generic. Some of the more interesting Acts include an appropriation of $40,000 for a Lunatic Asylum west of the Allegheny Mountains, an Act imposing a Tax on Dogs, and an Act imposing Taxes of Ninety Cents on Slaves and Sixty Cents on "Free Negroes" and white males aged 21 and above. Scarce, with great Confederate related content.
