Elusive 1860 "160 Acres Bounty Land" Grant Certificate
May 23, 1856-Dated, Partially-Printed Document, "Bounty Land 160 Acres" Pension Certificate, per the Congressional Act of March 3rd, 1855, Issued to a Revolutionary War Private, Fine.
May 23, 1856-Dated Extremely Rare Official Government Document, granting "Bounty Land of 160 Acres" to "David Strong, Private, Revolutionary War." Issued by the Department of the Interior, Office of the Commissioner of Pensions, Official Certificate, measuring about 8.5" x 11", printed in black and orange. Heavily evenly toned and with some pinholes and old fold splits which have been repaired on the blank reverse with archival tape. Distributed by the Department of the Interior, "Bounty Lands" were given to eligible officers and soldiers who had been confirmed as having engaged in military service for the United States, beginning with the Revolutionary War. This is a beautifully designed, well-engraved form by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson Co., of New York. At the top is a wonderful vignette of the United States Capitol building as it appeared in 1855. In addition are vignettes of General George Washington with sword left, and at the lower right an American Sailor with furled American Flag. Portraits of Secretary of the Navy John Dobbin and President Franklin Pierce. A very rare Pension Certificate Issued to a Revolutionary War Private in 1856 when very few still survived.
Mr. Strong must have been very old in 1856 if he had served in the Revolutionary War, even as a young boy. At least and at last, he finally had something for his service. These certificates don't say where the land was -- that would have been decided by the Land Office where this document would have been presented.
