1856 "Edward Everett" Autograph Letter Signed Regarding John Adams' "Papers of John Adams" in Various Volumes
EDWARD EVERETT (1794-1865). American politician, pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator, U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, 15th Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, United States Secretary of State, and Harvard University President. Great American Orator best remembered for his dedication at the Gettysburg National Cemetery in 1863, where he spoke for over two hours before President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous two-minute Gettysburg Address.
October 25, 1856-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "Edward Everett", 2 pages, 4.75" x 7.25", Boston, Choice Very Fine. Everett handsomely writes in rich deep brown on wove period paper to S. G. Deeth Esq., it reads:
"Boston 25 Oct. 1856. -- Dear Sir, -- I have this day received the first & tenth volumes of Adam's works from Washington. I have substituted your address for my own & sent it back to the Post - Office to go forward to you under Mr Dicken's frank. I have done something like this, in a former similar instance, with the permission of the Post - Office, so that I hope no objection will be made on this occasion. - I remain, Dear Sir, - respectfully Yours, - (Signed) Edward Everett".
It seems apparent that Edward Everett is referring to President John Adams', "Papers of John Adams" which ran from Volumes 1 and 2: September 1755 - April 1775 through Volume 16: February 1784 - March 1785. An interesting letter regarding the shipping of various volumes of John Adams historic Papers.
