1848 Amazing Letter Regarding George Washington's Remains and a small piece of the Coffin at Mt. Vernon
November 16, 1848-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "Kensey Johns Stewart", Regarding George Washington's Remains and Coffin, Fine.
This original Autograph Letter Signed, "Kensey Johns Stewart", 8" x 9.75", 2 pages, Akron, Summit Co., Ohio. Stewart writes to a General Bierce in full:
"General Bierce -- My Dear Sir, --- I send you herewith a small piece of the coffin in which the remains of General Washington reposed from the time of his death, up to the presentation of the sarcophagus in which they are now placed at Mt. Vernon.
There were three coffins, the outer one, which was much decayed; the Leaden one, with a glass face, which was not opened, or changed, & the intermediate one, from which this piece was taken. It was sometime in possession of Calvert Stewart Esq. of Va. whose wife was a decendant of the Washington family, & who received it from the Executor of the estate, with many other relics. The story of the publiclication (sic) about his remains being undecomposed & natural at the time of their removal, was a fabrication. His Exectutor, & the mason, who presented the sarcophagus were the only persons who looked through the glass of the leaden coffin. The body was much decayed. -- I remain very respectfully yours, - (Signed) Kensey Johns Stewart".
The second page has a story of Sir Jus. Murray, who traveling through America, was suprised to find that "the only mausoleum which marked the spot where Washington's remains reposed, was a plain brick & mortar covering of a simple marble sarcophagus, presented by an humble stone mason of Phila". Wax seal remnants and small tear when opened at top, paper is evenly toned. Worthy of further research. Docket on back page reads: "Washington's Coffin".
