1841 President "John Tyler" NAVY OF THE UNITED STATES Appointment
JOHN TYLER (1790-1862). Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, Annexed Texas and remained loyal to Virginia following its Secession from the Union.
August 31, 1841-Dated, Partially-Printed Vellum Document Signed, "John Tyler" as President, measuring 10.5' x 7," 1 page, Very Fine. President Tyler appoints, John M. Bradford to the position of Midshipman in the Navy from January 10, 1840...". Co-Signed by George E. Bader as Secretary of the Navy. Well printed in black on clean Vellum, somewhat rregular left margin, seal lacking, some ink splatter at mid-bottm edge, yet pleasing having a strong dark brown "John Tyler" signature. Joseph M. Joseph M. Bradford, was a descendant of Stephen Decatur. He was Naval officer, born in Sumner County, Tennessee, on November 4, 1824. He entered the navy as midshipman, January 10, 1840, became a lieutenant, September 16, 1855, and ultimately commander, July 25, 1866, retiring February 5, 1872. He was Lieutenant Commander during the Civil War, serving the South Atlantic blockading squadron from November, 1863, till June, 1865, during which period he saw severe service and performed his difficult duties to the satisfaction of his superior officers.
