1838 "Deed of Emancipation" Slavery Manumission Manuscript Official Document Listing Four Named Slaves Freed
December 12, 1838-Dated, Manuscript Document Signed, Slave Manumission, Listing Four Named Slaves, "forever set free the following negro men slaves belonging to the said deceadent at the time of his death," Very Fine.
This boldly handwritten in rich brown ink Manuscript Document measures about 8" x 10", 1 page written on both sides, "Bedford County". Nice in appearance, small top edge chip affecting one word, several old tape repaired fold splits on the reverse, on wove period paper that is easily readable. Being a Deed and testament of Emancipation and Manumission of four named Slaves. This document reads, in full:
"Know all men by these presents that I Hiram Cheatwood executor of the last will, and Testament of John Cheatwood deceased late of Bedford County, in pursuance of the provisions of the said last will, and Testament, have emancipated, and forever set free, and by these presents do emancipate, and forever set free the following negro men slaves belonging to the said deceadent at the time of his death, namely, Dick, Henry, Edmund and Powhatan. - Witness my Hand, and Seal this 12th day of December 1838." Docket on reverse reads:
"At a Court for Bedford County the 28th day of January 1839. This deed of emancipation was produced in Court proved by the oath of the two Subscribing witnesses therto & ordered to be recorded." Together with a seperate Recorder's note on a smaller slip of similar paper reading:
"Cheatwood's Deed of Emancipation - Dick etc."
