1837 Silver Martin Van Buren Peace Medal PCGS XF Julian IP-18 Original Strike 62 mm (Medium) GENUINE
1837 Martin Van Buren Peace Medal, Struck in Silver at the United States Philadelphia Mint, Original, 62 mm Medium Size, PCGS Certified GENUINE & graded Extremely Fine Details.
Julian IP-18. 62 mm (Medium Size). First Reverse (used from 1809-1849). Holed at the top for suspension (as issued), which is typical of the Indian Peace Medals presented to Native American Indians. This rare example's PCGS holder tag is certified "Genuine" and graded Extremely Fine details and noting some expected nominal damage. This Silver "Chief's" medal was subject to actual wear from use, while being worn by its recipient. It appears that this medal has both sides cleaned/polished long ago in its past, so it is impossible to say what the surfaces looked like originally as some of the reverse fields were smoothed to mitigate some surface pitting, thus the holder notes being repaired and is retoning naturally. It has a few minor nicks on the reverse, which appears to be the so stated damage on the holder. According to specialist author Julian, these Indian Peace medals first appeared as to their year dated in 1837, which was one of the most expeditious production time of any of the earlier Indian Peace Medals. After their production at the Philadelphia Mint, the medals were delivered to the office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs between 1837 and 1839 for presentation to Indian chiefs as diplomatic gifts. Further, Julian wrote, "The obverse die of this medal was also used to strike the special Van Buren Inaugural medal dated 1839 (PR-6)." Like most Original Silver Indian Peace Medals, the Martin Van Buren type is exceedingly rare. Julian recorded a total mintage of only 112 pieces of this size, and the number of survivors known has to be very low. The only sale we could find of this medal was in Stack's Ford XVI Sale of October 2006, in which a Fine to Very Fine specimen hammered for $13,500. We've offered later Silver and Bronze versions, but had only one 76 mm "Original" struck in Silver which brought $14,375.00 in our October 2000 auction sale. An example of an IP-19 being a 51 mm (Small Size) 1837 Silver Martin Van Buren Peace Medal was offered in our EAHA Auction of December 12, 2014, Lot 385 graded Fine to VF with bruises, sold for $20,400. In that same auction Lot 390, we offered an IP-35 Silver 62 mm (Medium Size) James Buchanan Peace Medal graded Fine to VF with edge bumps and bruises, which brought $21,600. This is the first such example of Julian IP-18 to appear, and that we have handled (we've offered several of the Bronze versions over the decades). This current example having far nicer rims and surfaces, providing superior overall eye appeal being PCGS graded Extremely Fine details. Being struck in Silver, and additionally in the rare 62 mm Medium Size, this extremely rare medal no doubt it is lacking in virtually all United States Mint medal collections, so we expect strong bidding.
