1836 Black History "SLAVE SHIP" Lithograph Plate Engraved by J.H. Buffords, NY, Published by John S. Taylor
1836-Dated, Broadside Style Transatlantic Slave Trade Lithograph titled, "SLAVE SHIP", by J.H. Bufford's, New York, Published by John S. Taylor, New York, Fine.
This extremely rare and instantly recognizable large Lithograph titled "SLAVE SHIP" measures about 17.75" x 12.75" unfolded and flat for display. This original Print is untouched. It has some fold edge splits worthy of simple archival reinforcement, minor loss of extended blank margin selvage at extreme center right and the 1836 wove period paper is even in light expected tone. This engraving is one of the most powerful visual referents of the horrors of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. A historic diagram illustrating in seven figures the method of Stowing Slaves aboard a cargo ship, which was later widely copied and distributed as a Broadside by British and American Abolitionists. The basis of the image is a diagram of the British Slave-Ship "Brookes" published in 1788 by the Plymouth Chapter of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. It was subsequently used in a number of contemporary texts, including Clarkson's History of the Rise, Progress, and Accomplishment of the Abolition of the African Slave-Trade by the British Parliament (London, 1808). Only one copy of the present version appears in the records of AmericanaExchange. Engraved text at bottom reads, in full: "Pub. by John S. Taylor, New-York, 1836" and "J.H. Bufford's Lith.y N.Y." at bottom right. An overall similar quality example sold at Bonhams, New York, April 7, 2014 auction for $6,875. A remarkable, full and complete museum quality example of this important rarity, which is well worthy of proper framing and display.
