FIRST EDITION, containing a large number of letters from Washington to Congress written between June 24, 1775 and December 31, 1778. Letters include Washington's own account of the evacuation of Boston, the Battle of Long Island, and the Battle of Trenton. Ex libris: David Gilston.
Very Scarce and desirable, original 1795 First Edition, London: for G.G. and J. Robinson, B. and J. White, T. Cadell and W. Davies, (vol.1), and for G.G. and J. Robinson, Paternoster Row and others (vol.2), 1795. Both measure 8.5" x 5.25", Fine. The first volume contains 364 pages; the second volume contains 384 pages. Both volumes of this original set are in their original period, calf leather bindings, with a remnant of the original spine label still present on Volume One. Both volumes complete. This First Edition part of the series: "American state papers, being a collection of Original and Authentic Documents Relative to the war between the United Stated and Great Britain."
These two volumes cover Washington's correspondence from June 1775 through December 1778. The boards and first few pages are somewhat loose. Overall, the pages are in very good condition with just some light typical tone throughout. Historically important and very scarce.
A similar 2-Volume Set sold at Christie's, Sale #11610, Lot 99, of the The Charles E. Sigety Collection, New York,| June 12th 2015 for $4,375. This currently offered complete Set appears to be in higher overall quality. Extremely rare, and an important work lacking in most library's and George Washington related collections.
