1794 Baron Von Steuben's "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States" Army Manual
1794-Dated Federal Period Edition, Hardcover Book titled, "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States," by Friedrich W. Von Steuben, New York: Greenleaf's Press, Complete, Very Fine.
1794-Dated 10th Edition Book was the first Drill Manual for the United States Army, authored by Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, Greenleaf's Press, New York, 95 pages, measuring 6.5" x 3.75", bound in brown leather boards. Commissioned to train troops at Camp Valley Forge, Baron Von Steuben first formed a model drill company of 120 men who were in turn to train further companies until the entire Continental Army was trained, under the same procedures as was the first company of troops. Following completion of this training exercise, Steuben published his drill instructions in a manual that was first published in 1779 that was widely distributed throughout the Continental Army with multiple editions. This historic military instruction book contains clear and direct instructions for marching, loading and firing weapons, assembling for inspection by officers, setting up encampments, and the expectations of each rank in all of these situations. This book also contains eight (8) Fold-out diagrams, each illustrating a particular practice discussed by von Steuben. This guide, commonly referred to as the "Blue Book", remained the official manual for the U.S. military until 1812. There is some bumping to the corners with expected spine and edge wear, one blank front sheet torn at top, one fold-out has a tear. Prior ownership inscription "S. Mackenzie" on the front flyleaf. Overall, above average, very nice and complete.
