1793 Maryland Revolutionary War Bond Certificate for Specie Bearing 6% Interest Anderson MD-7 Unique Usage

Rated as Rarity-6 (Perhaps 21 to 30 Known Surviving) according to William Anderson. This a a very rare Maryland Revolutionary War period Fiscal Bond Certificate for Specie. This certificate is number 2161 issued to John Robertson on August 5, 1793 in the amount of 100 Pounds and is hand signed by Thomas Harwood, Treasurer for the State and Maryland and also by American Patriot. This unique usage Certificate has the entire line which directs 6% Interest to be paid yearly crossed out with a single line, indicating that this was a straight payment obligation and no interest was to be due upon it. In addition, the printed partial date "178_" has been changed to read 1793, which is about a decade past the typical dating seen for the use of this MD-7 printed form on the 1781 Maryland Act. It has a large original outer sheet margin on the right side and full margins and border designs, with its original ornate curved Indented border intact at left. The manuscript portions are exceptionally clear and strong, the paper is crisp and clean with great print details with much original press text embossing remaining within the paper. This certificate is Unique, to our best knowledge in its changed state and is the latest use, being dated in 1793, that we have ever encountered. It is a fabulous, unique usage Maryland Revolutionary War era fiscal item, and a major type missing in most collections.
According to William G. Anderson's book, "The Price of Liberty," this Certificate form is cataloged as the MD-7 for type, and described as an Exchange Certificate, bearing 6 per cent interest, to adjust the debts due from the state, with a printed authorization date of May 10, 1781. William Barrow, to whom the certificate is issued, was the surveyor for Dorchester County, Maryland. The otherwise blank reverse has two interest payment notations, paid in 1783 and 1784, that are Signed by Thomas Harwood, the Treasurer.
Of special added interest to collectors is the final notation on the reverse, regarding this certificate. It is Signed by "Arch. Patison" in 1787. It is assumed that this is the same Archibald Patison of Dorchester County, Maryland whose enterprise "Patison & Company" owned and operated the American Privateer Schooner named "Molly". Records note the ship Molly carried two guns and was commanded by Joseph Elliot on May 10, 1780. Reference: Naval Records of the American Revolution 1775-1788 and Maryland Historical Magazine - 1908.
While Revolutionary War Fiscal Certificates from Connecticut and Massachusetts are fairly common. This is a far more rare opportunity for collectors to acquire an original, very historic and extremely rare 6% Interest Bearing Certificate from the State of Maryland. Truly on of the Finest Known to exist of this historic Revolutionary War type.
