1784 First Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Frederick Muhlenberg Autographed Letter Signed
FREDERICK MUHLENBERG (1750-1801). First Speaker of the House of Representatives, American Minister and Statesman; First Signer of the Bill of Rights, Member of the Continental Congress, and according to legend, prevented "German" from becoming an Official Language of the United States.
September 24, 1784-Dated Post Revolutionary War Period, Autographed Letter Signed, "Frederick Muhlenberg, Presdt.", in deep black ink on laid period paper watermarked "WM", Signed at the conclusion, Choice Very Fine. This Letter measures 8" x 13.25" and is Inscribed on one side with Docket on its reverse which has some traces along two edges of prior mounting. This Letter is addressed to historic figure John Dickinson, a.k.a. the "Penman of the Revolution," Signer of the United States Constitution, President of the Pennsylvania Executive Council, and Founding Father. This Letter reads, in full,
"In Council of Sessions - Sept. 24th. 1784. -- Sir --- Pursuant to the inclosed Resolution I am to request Your Excellency & the Honble the Supreme Executive Council to draw an Order in favor of the Secretary of this Council, for the Sum of on hundred pounds, being the remainder of the Sum appropriated by the Genl Assembly, to defray the contingent Expenses of this Board. I have the Honour to be with the highest Respect --- Sir --- Your Excellencys most obd.t humble Servt. -- (Signed) Frederick Muhlenberg, Presdt." Docket reads, in full: "1784 September 24th - From the Honble President of the Council of Censors".
Addressed at bottom left to: "His Excellency - Jno. Dickinson Esqr. Presidt. of the Supreme Ex(cutive) Council". An wonderful ALS to a second major American figure nicely penned in Muhlenberg's own hand with the original red wax seal of this letter still intact at lower left.
Frederick Augustus Conrad Muhlenberg (January 1, 1750 - June 4, 1801) was an American minister and politician who was the first Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. A delegate to the Pennsylvania state constitutional convention and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania and a Lutheran pastor by profession, Muhlenberg was born in Trappe, Pennsylvania. His home, known as The Speaker's House, is now a museum and is currently undergoing restoration to restore its appearance during Muhlenberg's occupancy.
