January 8th, 1784-Dated Revolutionary War Era, Manuscript Document Signed, "George Wyllys" as Secretary of the Assembly, regarding payment of Securities given for previous supplies furnished for the Continental Army, New Haven (Connecticut), Very Fine.
1784 Official Draft True Copy of the "Act" regarding payment of various Securities given for previous Supplies destined for the American Continental Army, at New Haven (Connecticut), to Timothy Bradley, Signed by "George Wyllys" as Secretary. This original Handwritten True Copy, is "A true copy of Record" and Signed Jan. 8, 1784 by George Wyllys (1710-1796) as the longtime Secretary of the Connecticut General Assembly (1734-1795). This Document is nicely written in rich brown ink on laid period paper, some fine clear archival reinforcement of folds on the blank reverse. This Document is easily readable, 1 page, measuring 7.5" x 12.5" with bold written Docket and a separate signed notation of payment receipt on the otherwise blank reverse. This historic "Act" reads, in part:
"At a general Assembly of the Govr. and Company of the State of Connecticut holden at New Haven by Adjournment on the 8th Day of January Anno Dom: 1784 --- Upon the Memorial of Timothy Bradley of New Haven showing that on application to the Treasurer of this State for payment of one hundred pounds, of the Securities given him by said Treasurer for Supplies furnished the Cont.(inental) Army, out of any unappropriated Tax or the avails of Confiscated Estates, agreeable to former Resolves of this Assembly hath not been able to obtain payment in that Manner and that he is now hardly pressed for Supplies by him so furnished praying for Relief..."
It being resolved that One hundred pound in payment was to be forthcoming to Timothy Bradley of New Haven. Docket notation on the reverse, plus Timothy Bradley signs in receipt of the 100 of funds, dated on February 10, 1784. This draft written by George Wyllys would have been kept as an official record, or used for the official publication of Assembly Acts issued for that year. An important example mentioning State Securities issued in lieu of actual payment for Supplies for the Continental Army due to the shortage of funds during the Revolutionary War and how later payments were made from the proceeds of "Confiscated (Tory, British Loyalist) Estate" sales.
