BENJAMIN CONDY (died 1798). Early Scientific Navigational Instrument Maker active from 1756 to 1792, maker of mathematical, optical & navigational instruments, such as telescopes, quadrants, compasses, surveying instruments, quadrants, etc., who had a Shop on South Front Street, Philadelphia.
October 5, 1763-Dated French and Indian War Period, Manuscript Document Signed, "Beny.n Condy" being the Invoice Signed in Receipt of payment on the blank reverse, Choice Extremely Fine. This extremely well written Document is on clean, laid period paper with easily read text in rich brown ink in the amount of " 0 :18: 3, Philada. Oct 5 1763". It is 1 page, measures about 5 5/8" x 5 1/2,", and is from Benjamin Condy to Ship Captain Edward Clague for repairing several navigational instruments, etc. for his Brig. It includes: "Touching of four Compas's (sic); new Glasses for two and glaizing (sic) of three; Whitening of all four; mending a Card and two new Caps; Mending a Gimber (sic) (probably a gimbal which is a type of compass) & a new Center; Trying a Parcle (sic) of Sand Glasses; a new object end for a Telescope, cleaning and mending". Apparently, after a long voyage or in preparation for a new, basic repairs and cleaning were required for the ship's critical instruments. This is the very first example of such billing for scientific naval navigational instruments we have encountered for this critical period in American Colonial history. Benjamin Condy was one of the best in his craft in America at that time and is known to have been doing this work between 1756 to 1792. As early as 1756 he worked for most of the merchant shippers of the port of Philadelphia, supplying them with a considerable number of sand glasses and other supplies. Other than one small spindle hole near center, this invoice is in exceptional high quality. Benjamin Condy's signature on the reverse is sharp and well written in rich brown ink. Very rare.
