1757 Mass. STAMP REVENUE ACT Embossed 4-Pence "Sailing Ship" Vignette Listed as Scott Stamp Catalog RM4
March 28, 1757-Dated French & Indian War Period, Manuscript Document Signed, "Dan'l Moulton," Biddeford, Maine, Very Fine, with Colonial Massachusetts STAMP REVENUE ACT Embossed 4-Pence "Sailing Ship" vignette Revenue Stamp, Scott Cat. RM4, Very Fine.
This original 1757 Manuscript Land Sale Document measures about 7.5" x 12.5", 1 page, being a record of Benjamin Carll's sale to Jonathan Winget of a tract of land in Scarborough. The rare Embossed "IV Pence" Ship vignette Revenue Stamp is located at the upper left, partially obscured by a Wax and Paper Signature Seal on the reverse side placed opposite the embossed stamp with some darkening at its center, being one of several such scattered signature seals. Of the four Embossed Revenue Tax Stamps issued by Massachusetts, this was the second rarest (after the Halfpence) and it is the rarest of the "Embossed" versions (the Halfpence was printed). This Document shows some typical foxing along the creases and some insignificant splits or pinholes at the folds. Boldly signed by Daniel Moulton, Esqr. (1717-1788) who was born in York, Maine. He was the son of Col. Jeremiah Moulton and Hannah Ballard ... Daniel married Hannah Preble, 5 January 1739/40, in York. Daniel Moulton was the brother of the historic Colonel Jeremiah Moulton (1688-1765). A nice example dated 1757.
Colony of Massachusetts REVENUE STAMP ACT Embossed 4-Pence "Sailing Ship" vignette Revenue Stamp, Scott Cat. RM4.
The imposed a Tax on certain documents by the Act of January 8, 1755 using Embossed revenues, while New York Colony imposed a similar tax between 1757 and 1760. The tax was in effect from May 1, 1755 to April 30, 1757. Stamps were issued in the following denominations: 1/2d, 2d, 3d, and 4d.
The "Embossed" Revenue Stamp could be impressed upon ordinary paper; however, it was not possible to impress the stamp on vellum. Instead, for documents prepared on vellum, the Revenue stamp was impressed upon either beige or dark blue paper first, which had been glued and stapled to the vellum and attached.
