1720 Examination regarding a "Bastard Child" born to Mary Lake of Little Compton, R.I. with Oath Taken by Job Almy
June 14, 1720-Dated Colonial America, Manuscript Document Signed, "Job Almy" (1681-1767), Examination regarding a Bastard Child from Little Compton, R.I., testimony taken at Tiverton, R.I., Very Fine.
Sworn "Oath" legal Document listing three very specific questions presented to Mary Lake, a single woman, from Little Compton, Rhode Island, where she is examined and admits that John Fisher, a weaver, is the father of her Bastard Baby which she has "been with" since November of the prior year "to the best of my remembrance". Document is boldly Signed at bottom by "Job Almy" as justice. This clean laid period paper legal Document has one small dark edge spot measures about 4" x 5", in overall pleasing condition. Reverse Docket reads: "The Examination of Mary Lake."
Job Almy, son of Job and Mary (Unthank) Almy, was born March 3, 1681, died Jan. 25, 1767. Job Almy belonged to Tiverton, then in Massachusetts, and represented that town in the Legislature. He was appointed judge of the Bristol county Common Pleas Court in 1740 to succeed George Leonard, and remained on the bench until 1747.
Mary LAKE was born Sept. 19, 1689 in Dartmouth, MA. and married Richard Borden (1697-1740) on Sept. 14th, 1720 in Tiverton, Rhode Island.
